Main Building / TPS1 Arrival & Dismissal

TPS2 Arrival & Dismissal

Vehicle Arrival Procedures

Timing – Drop-off begins at 7:45a each day. Classes begin promptly at 8a. All students should arrive prior to 8a.

Closed Turn & Alley – From 7:45-8a, no right turn is permitted from Washington Street onto Smith Avenue, and no thru-traffic is permitted via the alley behind the Main Building, in compliance with City-arranged protocols.

Vehicle Positioning – When on Lincoln Street, always move as far to the left on the street as possible while lining up. When on Smith Avenue, always move as far to the right on the street as possible while lining up. This allows for non-school thru-traffic.

Vehicle Exit, Booster Seats & Carrying Children – All children are required to exit vehicles from the passenger side for safety. Young children still in booster seats must be able to unbuckle themselves without adult help, in order to keep the line moving smoothly. If a child is not yet able to unbuckle themselves independently, adults should park and drop off their children by foot, walking them to the arrival line. Adults are not permitted to get out of their vehicles while in the vehicle line. Please also note that although we know that young children sometimes struggle with saying goodbye to family at arrival, we are unable to carry children into the building due to safety. We do all we can to support children with gentle and words, hand holding, and other encouragement. But we are unable to carry them.

Crossing Guards – TPS staff members are on duty during the arrival window to help ensure student safety, at both the eastern end of the ramp in front of the Main Building, and at the intersection of Washington Street and Smith Avenue. Follow all crossing guard instructions for stopping, driving forward and turning. Drivers should not be on electronic devices while in the line, so that they are prepared to follow all crossing guard instructions as quickly as possible. Disrespect of crossing guards – either disregard for directions or verbal accosting – will be addressed by school leadership.

Dropping Students on Foot – When walking a child to approach school, please say goodbye at the bottom of the ramp from the side you approach. Family members should not enter the ramp during arrival without prior arrangements made with the school leader. Please remember that the current protocol is that no family members may enter the building. Please also remember that families dropping off their children on foot are currently asked to wear masks while on TPS property.

Middle School Student Arrival Location – (1) Middle School students in John's and Luis' homerooms follow the Main Building/TPS1 procedure; (2) Middle School students in Abbey's and Tarrey's homerooms who have no younger siblings attending the school follow the TPS2 procedure; (3) Families with students learning in both buildings follow the Main Building/TPS1 procedure for dropping all students, and TPS staff escorts Middle School students to TPS2.

Late Arrival – (1) If your student begins their day in the Main Building and arrives late on a particular day, you may drop them off at the bottom of the ramp. Family members should remain at the building (in a vehicle is fine) until they observe that their student has been safely let in the building. (2) If your Middle School student studying at TPS2 arrives late on a particular day, have them go to the exit door of their lead classroom (the ramp door of Ms. Abbey's classroom off the alley, or the Washington Street facing door for Mr. Tarrey's classroom) and knock. The teachers will let students in. Do not have them stand at the main entrance to knock, as there may not be an adult present to hear them. Family members should remain at the building (in a vehicle is fine) until they observe that their student has been safely let in the building. (3) If your student is being dropped off late, and you are unsure where they should be at that particular moment, please drop them at the bottom of the ramp of the Main Building, and the front office staff will assist them in getting them where they need to be. Family members should remain at the building (in a vehicle is fine) until they observe that their student has been safely let in the building.

Main Building/TPS1 Drop-Off
Primary & Intermediate (K-5)
John's & Luis' Middle School Homerooms
Families with Students Learning in Both Buildings

Queue for drop-off from Lincoln Street to Smith Avenue. All vehicles approach the Main Building in the following fashion: (1) Second Street to Lincoln Street; (2) North on Lincoln Street; (3) West (left) onto Smith Avenue. Students may be dropped off in front of the ramp, or they may be dropped off on Smith Avenue prior to crossing Washington, and be assisted by a crossing guard. If students are dropped prior to crossing Washington, drivers may turn left at Washington and exit heading south. Students should only be permitted to exit cars along Smith before Washington if a crossing guard is present. If no guard is present, students should remain in vehicles as Washington is crossed, and then be dropped at the bottom of the Main Building ramp.

TPS2 Drop-Off
Abbey's & Tarrey's Middle School Homerooms (if no siblings being dropped off at the Main Building)

All vehicles approach TPS2 in the following fashion: (1) Take Third Street to Washington, and head south on Washington; (2) Go through the cross walk at Smith when permitted to do so, and pull in front of TPS2 on South Washington Street. Students enter the building via the main entrance on the south side of the building (the alley side). Once students have departed vehicles, vehicles may continue south on Washington Street, or turn right onto the alley running along the south of TPS2 for exit onto Walnut Street.

Vehicle Dismissal Procedures

Timing – Vehicles should not begin lining up early for dismissal. Monday-Thursday, vehicles may begin lining up at 3:20p for the Main Building/TPS1 line, and 3:30p for the TPS2 line. On Fridays, vehicles may begin lining up at 1p for the Main Building/TPS1 line, and 1:10p for the TPS2 line.

Closed Turn & Alley – No right turn is permitted from Washington Street onto Smith Avenue, and no thru-traffic is permitted via the alley behind the Main Building, during the dismissal window times of 3:20-3:45p Monday-Thursday, and 1-1:20p Friday, in compliance with City-arranged protocols.

Pick-Up Cards – Each family receives two pick-up cards with the student and family’s name(s) on the card, giving permission to pick up their child. If additional cards are needed, families may make their own by copying the original or may request additional copies from the office. Cards can be picked up the day after the request is made. Once dismissal begins at 3:25p (1p on Fridays), A TPS staff member uses a Walkie-Talkie to gather child(ren) from classroom(s). A pick-up card must be displayed in the center of vehicle dash boards, so that staff members calling for students are able to see the names and call efficiently.

Vehicle Positioning – When on Lincoln Street, always move as far to the left on the street as possible while lining up. When on Smith Avenue, always move as far to the right on the street as possible while lining up. This allows for non-school thru-traffic.

Vehicle Entrance & Booster Seats – All children are required to enter vehicles from the passenger side for safety. Young children still in booster seats must be able to buckle themselves in without adult help, in order to keep the line moving smoothly. If a child is not yet able to buckle themselves independently, adults should park and pick up their children by foot, to walk them back to the car for buckling. Adults are not permitted to get out of their vehicles while in the vehicle line.

Alternative Pick-up to the Procedures – If a family chooses to pick up in any fashion other than the assigned procedures, they are required to park and exit their vehicle and retrieve their child on foot, bringing their pick-up card with them to show to a staff. Please do not park in adjacent business or residential parking lots. See below for permitted parking options.

Crossing Guards – TPS staff members are on duty each afternoon during the dismissal window to help ensure student safety, at both the eastern end of the ramp in front of the Main Building, and at the intersection of Washington Street and Smith Avenue.

Picking Up Children on Foot – Family members who approach school on foot to wait for their children during dismissal should never be on the ramp. They should wait on the sidewalk along Smith or in the staff parking lot for their children to be dismissed. Please remember that the current protocol is that no family members may enter the building. Please also remember that families picking up their children on foot must currently wear masks while waiting on TPS property, and should have their pick-up card in hand to show to staff.

Middle School Student Dismissal Location – (1) Families with students learning in both buildings follow the Main Building/TPS1 procedure for all their students, regardless of where their Middle School student is ending their instructional day; (2) Families with Middle School students with no siblings in the Main Building/TPS1 follow the TPS2 procedure, no matter where their Middle School student is ending their instructional day.

Early Pick-Up Instructions

Please use these instructions when picking up a child early from school for the remainder of the day, or for a midday appointment.

1) Complete the Absence Notification Form to alert us that you’ll be picking up your student early on a particular day. In the form, you’ll be prompted to share that specific information.

2) No matter which building your student is studying in, please pull up to the main building, and call the front office at 812.558.0041 (or if you do not have a mobile phone, come to the Main Building front door), to let us know who you are picking up. We will then call for the student to determine where they are at that moment. We will then direct you to remain at the Main Building, head to the park, or head to TPS2, depending on their current location.

3) Please give yourself a few extra minutes when picking up midday, to allow for this procedure.

If you are returning a student to school after a midday appointment, please call the office or walk your child to the door, to confirm the location where they should be dropped.

Parking

Vehicles should not be parked in any adjacent business or residential parking lot for arrival, dismissal or midday visits, as we do not have permission. We want to remain good neighbors!

The following parking options may be available when visiting our school -

Metered parking adjacent to the school (free till 8am, $1/hour after)

Waldron, Hill & Buskirk Park/3rd Street Park

4th Street Parking Garage

Walking/Biking/Public Transportation

Students are encouraged to walk, take the city bus (with their terminal conveniently located one half block from our front doors), or bike to school when this is a safe possibility. As is required in Bloomington, bikers must wear helmets. The Project School is not responsible for the loss or damage of any personal property, including bicycles parked in the bicycle racks. Bicycles should be secured with a personal lock, and helmets should be kept in lockers/cubbies during the school day. Bike racks are available in the front of the Main Building/TPS1 along Walnut Street and in front of TPS2 on Washington Street.

When walking a child to approach school, adults should say goodbye at the bottom of the ramp from the approached side. Family members who approach school on foot to wait for their children during dismissal should never be on the ramp. They should wait on the sidewalk on Smith (for the Main Building) and on Washington (for TPS2) their children to be dismissed, and should have their pick-up cards in hand. Families picking up students on foot or bike should approach a staff member during dismissal to request that their students be called to the area. Current protocol is that family members are not permitted to enter the building, and should not be on the Main Building ramp during arrival or dismissal. Please also remember that families dropping off and picking up their children on foot must currently wear masks while waiting on TPS property.

All students who will be dismissed independently (meaning they will depart TPS on their own) – either regularly or occasionally – must have permission on file. If you did not complete this permission during enrollment, and wish to now do so, please contact the front office.

Protocol for the Sharing of Alternate Dismissal Information & Absences

If you need to share information regarding an absence, late arrival, early departure, mid-day appointment, or change in dismissal plan, please utilize our Absence Notification Form.

Because faculty are teaching and learning throughout the day, they are not often able to answer their telephones. Please do not use faculty voice mail to leave messages of a time sensitive or emergency nature, or to share information about dismissal changes.

Transportation Assistance

TPS works individually and creatively with families living within the Bloomington area who cannot provide their own transportation to get their children to school. Our goal is to make sure that every child has a secure method for arriving to school on time each day. We are dedicated to assisting all of our families to insure that no one is denied access to TPS due to transportation challenges. If you would like the school's partnership in developing a transportation plan, please contact us to discuss options.
