Heidi

Heidi Carmichael – Inclusion Specialist (TPS since 2024)

I've been an educator since 2000, and hold a master's degree in education with a focus on trauma and resilience. I thrive on building connections and supporting each child's unique gifts. Committed to creativity, innovation, and social justice in education, I hope to foster an inclusive environment where every child feels valued. My son was also a student at The Project School, which allowed me to deepen my connection to the community. Outside of the classroom, I enjoy restorative travel, which affords me the opportunity to explore cultures, create writing that inspires and encourages, and connect with the beautiful humans I know and the new ones I has yet to meet on this grand adventure!

Natalie Elam – Lead Teacher (1-2) (TPS since 2022)

This is my 3rd year at TPS. I am so excited to be a part of this school! My kids are both at TPS and love it. I have a bachelor's degree in Outdoor Recreation and Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University. I also have a master's in Early Childhood Education from Arizona State University. I have taught preschool in Illinois and New Zealand, and multiage K-4 in England. Previously, I was the K-1 TPS teacher. I love using STEM and project-based learning in my classroom. I think it is important to a make connection with each child and I am excited to get to know your child. When I am not teaching, I love spending time with my family: hiking, traveling, enjoying the outdoors, playing board games, and reading.

Maris

Maris Fish – Lead Teacher (K-1) (TPS since 2020)

The Project School is the place where my passion for social and emotional care and teaching were born. I began my education here at TPS as a student during our opening year in 2009. I continued my TPS education with internships, activism, and volunteer work in high school and as an adult. Inspired by TPS, I went on to earn a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education at Indiana University. After working at TPS as an Instructional Assistant for two years, I practiced trauma-informed care at New Hope Early Learning Center. I then proudly returned to TPS as a product of our curriculum and care. Prior to stepping into the role of Primary Lead Teacher, I served as a TPS Social-Emotional Learning Facilitator. I greatly enjoy traveling, concert going, and spending time with family and friends!

Em Jalkanen – Lead Teacher (2-3) (TPS since 2010)

Hi there! I am so excited to meet our new students and reconnect with kiddos who are coming back. Here are some things you might want to know about me: 1) I live here in Bloomington with my three children Emma, Dominic, Nora, and my husband John. 2) I am a teacher who works hard to listen and to help everyone get what they need. 3) I am a teacher who is working on learning new ways to help all students do their very best growing and learning. 4) I LOVE mistakes! Yes, that's right, I LOVE them because when we share our mistakes together everyone can grow. 5) Making a classroom that feels safe, fun, and cozy is very important to me. This year in school I hope I get to play, learn new things, and help others. What are you hoping you get to do at school this year?

I have been with TPS since 2009. I've worked within K-3 classrooms over the years as an instructional assistant, intern, and now for many years as a lead teacher. I love being outside and going on adventures. My husband Tyler, 2 daughters Lily and Ruby, and dog Max enjoy dancing, card games, being silly, road trips, finding ways to help, reading, and singing loudly.
